Venturing was born on August 1, 1998. It began with 12,626 units. It has grown to 18,800 units, a 49% increase in four years. Venturing began with 148,595 members in August of 1998. It has grown to 244,241 Venturers, a 64% increase.
Many factors have contributed to this
growth. An aggressive promotional effort nation-wide coupled with lots of
potential has served as the foundation for the growth.
The National Venturing Division has
created targeted resources for new unit growth; sales kits, brochures, videos,
etc., that have empowered professionals and volunteers to organize new Venturing
crews.
The Venturing program has been
tailored for teenagers. They like the emphasis on extreme sports, high
adventure, coed involvement and less emphasis on uniforming.
Serving units means that Councils need to provide an
infrastructure of support. This infrastructure includes; Venturing roundtables,
commissioners assigned to each unit, Venturing Leader Specific Training offered
regularly, council or district events exclusively for Venturers, hosting Powder
Horn and Nature of Leadership courses, and keeping supply and bin items in
stock.
Experience has also shown that Council’s with successful Venturing
programs appoint a professional staff advisor for Venturing, serve crews in
traditional districts and spend time at each staff meeting discussing strategies
for Venturing growth.
Much potential exists with Venturing growth. Nationally we have barely scratched the surface. With a concentrated effort to organize new Venturing crews and build an infrastructure to support them, councils can reap the rich harvest in Venturing.
